How to reduce food waste during the holidays

Food waste is not only an ethical issue but also an environmental issue.

If buyers, chefs and consumers around the world had a little more foresight and owned the planning system, most of the food wouldn’t be in the form of food waste to landfills.

For example, Americans throw away 35 million tons of food products annually, the cost is $ 124 per year, according to research conducted by The Atlantic. This huge volume of waste is 20% of the total amount of waste going to landfills, and is the result of poor planning.

On the one hand, these products were purchased by buyers who wanted to eat them, but somehow forgot about them, they have been kept in the fridge or was improperly prepared.
Food waste is more than an ethical issue, this environmental issue. “Landfills are the second largest human-created source of methane. Food is the second largest component of landfills. In a sense, we ourselves contribute to global warming when emitted the food,” says author and expert in the field of food waste Jonathan Bloom.

During the holidays it happens that a heavy meal follow one another, so in this period it is especially important to control the products that are purchased, consumed, are not eaten and stored for cooking new dishes.
There are a few simple ways to reduce food waste and save money – the underlying planning system.

Start with the perishable items. If you have fresh ingredients, use them in the first place. Prepare a meal from what you have stored in the fridge instead of heading to the grocery store, so you will save also time.

Learn to recognize the different stages of the aging foods and find out which products and how can be used, for example, blackened bananas are perfect for baking, bodanova vegetables are good in soups and braised dishes, stale bread, too, can find application.

The freezer has a huge help because it can store not only fresh produce until you’re ready to use them, and ready-made meals until you’re ready to eat them. You must indicate on the container the date of manufacture of the food.

Plan your menu in advance, then you will know what products to buy, and that they most likely will be used for cooking.
