Vaccination against polio: why it is needed

Today on the website continue the conversation about a controversial and puzzling issue for mothers – vaccination of children. Quite understandable and natural desire of parents to gather as much information about vaccinations before you decide whether to put their child and if so, which ones. Following vaccination in the national vaccination calendar, which we’ll tell you — the vaccination against polio.

If you read our previous article on the topic of vaccination, you remember how to put children vaccine DTAP – at the age of 3 months, 4.5 months and 6 months.

According to the national vaccination calendar brand at the same time is the vaccine against polio.

The first revaccination against the disease is conducted in 18 months, the second in 20 months. And after that a big break is the third booster, which our children need to be 14 years.

Dangerous than polio?

Polio – a terrible and serious disease that is expressed in the spinal cord lesions by the virus. Because it affects the Central nervous system, the consequence of this disease may be paralysis of various muscle groups. That is, people may remain severely disabled, and in the case of a virus attack the respiratory system, the disease ends in death.

The contamination comes from the carrier of the virus by airborne droplets or through dirty hands.

Because this disease is contagious and is most sensitive to it children aged to 7 years, the importance of vaccination against polio cannot be overstated.

Polio actively fighting around the world since 60-ies of the last century, instilling in children, and it gave its results in developed countries cases they have not fixed.

Problematic regions are still some of the troubled Asian countries. Regret that due to the large number of migrants from Asian countries, the problem of polio in Russia can hardly be called fully resolved.

In contrast, for example, against diphtheria, special tools type serum against polio is not yet invented, treatment is symptomatic and is reduced to the relief of the patient. Therefore, the only way to combat this disease that has already passed the Western countries – is vaccination against poliomyelitis.

How dangerous is the vaccine against polio?

There are two types of the polio vaccine is the inactivated vaccine and the oral live vaccine. What’s the difference?

Inactivated vaccine non-living, it contains killed viruses of poliomyelitis (by the way, the polio virus exist in three different forms) and injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Creates General immunity against poliomyelitis (less strong than in the case of live vaccine).

A live vaccine, as the name implies, contains weakened viruses and is introduced orally – through the mouth in the form of drops. Entering the intestine, it forms there local immunity against poliomyelitis, which is more secure compared to an inactivated vaccine.

The oral form of the introduction provides for certain restrictions: during the hours after vaccination, the child should not neither drink nor eat, but if it is time tore – vaccination must be repeated.

It complications of live vaccination against polio parents and afraid.

Normally, the consequences of this “live” vaccination against polio should not be bigger than a small bowel disorder, which itself must go in the next day or two, or a mild allergic reaction.

But, unfortunately, there are cases (the doctors say that it is very rare and minimal probability), when children received live polio vaccine, polio was sick.

Polio caused by the vaccine, called vaccine-associated poliomyelitis (abbreviated as VAP).

Perhaps the reason was the weakened immune system of the child is another argument in favour of the principle in addition to check the immune status before vaccination. If the child note any pathology of the immune system is the Foundation to cease any live vaccines because the risk is too great.

A sick gut, any problems with the gastrointestinal tract – is also a reason to abandon vaccination with a live vaccine, at least at the moment. Imagine what done live virus in a weakened intestinal microflora unbalanced?!

The other type of complications that can give a vaccination against polio is a neurological disorders (neuritis, convulsions).

There is another nuance associated with vaccination against polio.

Children who received live vaccines, within a time to be carriers, that is, to highlight the weakened polio virus in the environment. For healthy others – children and adults – it is safe.

But the risk of Contracting VAP exists for children with immunodeficiency who are not treated with the inactivated vaccine (from the kindergarten, where other children get the vaccine the oral vaccine, they can quarantine to be safe), and adults with immunodeficiency States (e.g., receiving therapy that suppresses the immune system).
